22 NBA teams set off for Orlando tomorrow, beginning the bubble plan into action. There are strict rules, found in a 108 page book, that players and staff must follow while at Disney world. Regular testing is required, along with masks. Players get almost anything their hearts desire: golfing, video games, movies, hiking trails, chefs, swimming pools etc. etc. Still, there are a ton of concerns... for me, there's fairness.
I will admit, I never saw the NBA coming back; and agreed with players and personalities saying that it's not practical. The NBA has thought of everything they can do to keep the players safe, though.
The problem I see is what happens if, let's say Giannis, or another big name gets sick? Let's even take it a step back... if the 15th man on a team gets sick, it puts that team at a severe disadvantage. Players will have to quarantine, mess up their routines, go through even more testing. The player that tested positive will have to go into an isolated living situation until they continue to test positive. I bet you would have to lock down the whole hotel that the team stays at.... meaning 7 other teams are affected. Just doesn't seem fair to me.
You see the Nets now. They just announced today that Dinwiddie has tested positive and will not be making the trip. Additionally, Carol, Chandler, Kyrie and Deandre Jordan will not be playing. This changes their roster completely. The Nets being the 7 seed will probably just drop to 8 seeing as how the Wizards star Bradley Beal will not be playing. But it makes them almost no challenge for a team like the Bucks. The west is similar, especially with the Jazz missing Bogdanovic and other key pieces for this playoff push.
I HOPE the NBA bubble works out. I HOPE nobody gets infected. I am just worried that IF one player does, the whole thing gets shut down (even though the NBA already stated that they would continue games)
Let me know how you feel.... I can go on.
Here is what players will be going through the next few days according to NBC sports:
- From July 7 to 9, players will arrive at the Walt Disney World complex in Orlando. Team arrivals will be spread out over three days to avoid congestions.
- Upon arrival, players will be quarantined in their hotel room until they have two negative coronavirus tests 24 hours apart. After that, players will be tested “regularly,” according to the handbook, although that could be daily or close to it for much of the time in Orlando.
- Each player will be given a “MagicBand” — a bracelet that serves as a room key and wallet throughout the hotel and Disney property. It also will be used to check-in players for testing.
• Players also can wear a “proximity alarm” that will notify the wearer if he or she spends more than five seconds within six feet of another person with the alarm. All team and league staff will be required to wear these.
• Everyone will be required to wear a facemask, except when eating, at a workout or practice, in their room, or if they are swimming or doing something more than six feet away from another person (laying out by the pool with nobody around).
• All the food will be cooked by Disney chefs on-site, and each team will work with a “culinary team” that will make every effort to design a menu that fits dietary needs of each team. Players can have private chefs who prepare meals off-site, which can be brought into the players.
• Disney is open to setting up dining experience for players/teams at some of the restaurants on the Disney property but outside the bubble area, or having that food brought into the bubble.
